U.S. Senate Begins Series of Votes on Brown’s Bill to Crack Down on Fentanyl Traffickers and Strengthen National Security

Package Includes Brown’s FEND Off Fentanyl Act and Will Help Combat National Security Threats

WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 23, 2024 – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) hosted a press conference call to push for the passage of his Fentanyl Eradication and Narcotics Deterrence (FEND) Off Fentanyl Act, which the U.S. Senate has begun voting on. Brown was joined on the call by Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn. Brown’s FEND Off Fentanyl Act passed the House over the weekend as part of the bipartisan national security package, which will help combat foreign threats from China, Russia, and Iran.

The FEND Off Fentanyl Act would impose new sanctions and anti-money laundering penalties targeting the illicit fentanyl supply chain, from the chemical suppliers in China to the cartels that transport the drugs from Mexico.

“For years, law enforcement, border patrol, and advocates on the front lines of this fight have called for action to keep fentanyl out of our communities,” said Brown. “Today, as my colleagues and I begin to vote on this package, I remind them this our chance to take action against the cartels and traffickers bringing deadly fentanyl into our country.”

The Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Officers, the National Sheriff’s Association, and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association have called for the passage of the legislation.
