Edible Soil, Dig Deep to Eat

Join the Park District as we dig deep for some edible, soil-loving fun! Children and their families will eat-up this delicious activity. Did you know there are over 85 different soil types in Knox County? We will demonstrate the different layers of soil and encourage discussion on soil’s vital role in sustaining plant and animal life on our planet.

Soil is so much more than what’s under the grass. Each layer of earth is defined by its own “horizon”. These horizons run parallel to the ground and serve up distinctive characteristics that aid the layers above and below. When a vertical section of these many horizons is taken, it’s known as a soil profile. Profiling soil isn’t the most exciting activity, but creating an edible representation of all the layers sure can be!
