Governor DeWine Issues Statement on Death of Former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today issued the following statement regarding the death of former United States Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin:

“Fran and I are saddened to learn of the death of our friend and my former colleague, U.S. Senator Herb Kohl.

“We served together on the Senate Judiciary Committee.  For about 10 years, Herb and I were on the Antitrust Subcommittee.  When Republicans controlled the Senate, I was the Chair, and Herb was the Ranking Member.  When Democrats controlled the Senate, Herb was Chair, and I was Ranking Member.  We worked very closely together and agreed to run the Subcommittee in a bipartisan, non-political way–and always did.

“Together, we held more than 50 hearings on a wide range of competition issues in telecommunications, aviation, healthcare, sports, and technology.  We worked together to keep the focus on competition and on ways to make the antitrust laws work for ordinary people.

“Herb was a quiet, pragmatic leader, never seeking the spotlight or credit for his legislative accomplishments.  He was a decent and honorable person, who gave much back over his lifetime to his beloved state of Wisconsin.

“He will be missed.”
