Wildlife Wednesday – The Luna Moth

It’s Wildlife Wednesday with our Ohio Division of Wildlife Who else goes LOONY for LUNA moths?!
Some of our most beautiful winged creatures are moths, especially the large, attractive, and unmistakable luna moth. Biologically, moths rank high among our most important groups of organisms. Adult moths serve as food for bats, birds and spiders.

THREE FUN FACTS:
  •  Luna moths (Actias luna) belong within the giant silkworm moth family saturniidae along with polyphemus, promethea, and cecropia moths.
  •  The hypersensitive antennae of luna moths and other silkmoths can detect female pheromones from a mile or more away.
  •  Adults do not eat but subsist on energy retained from their feeding as larvae; they live for a week or less.
