BBB Tip: GivingTuesdayNow has Slightly Different Goal

Traditionally, people aren’t thinking about making a charitable contribution or donating their time until around the holiday season. COVID-19 has been somewhat of a disruptor in the fact it has left many nonprofits quickly mobilizing to help the recently unemployed, supporting local community foodbanks, and recruiting volunteers on short notice.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a recently mobilized event to support giving and unity, encourage action from business and philanthropy, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world. According to a survey conducted by the Wise Giving Alliance, quite often people say trust is important before donating to charity.

When thinking about how to help, it doesn’t always have to be through a contribution. Sometimes it’s a kind gesture. For example:

  • Donating supplies for local healthcare workers, first responders, advocating for them, and staying home.
  • Give to the community organizations where the resources and services stay in your community. Many charities could use some support right now. according to a recent survey.
  • Support small businesses by buying gift cards, connecting with them through social media, or writing an online review.
  • Checking in with neighbors, relatives, seniors or veterans using social distancing

Before committing to making a contribution, make certain it’s an organization that is verifiable and legitimate. Wise Giving Alliance has additional information for donors.
