There are several types of hummingbird feeders that you can use in your backyard to help these beautiful pollinators. Inverted feeders are one kind, and saucer feeders are the other common feeder. Inverted feeders have a higher capacity and can be easily checked, but tend to leak more, which attracts insects. Saucer feeders are popular because they are easier to clean and fill, but they need to be refilled more often. Any feeder you choose should incorporate the color red since that attracts hummingbirds. Many feeders also offer insect guards to help keep bees and ants out of the nectar. If refilling a feeder several times a week isn’t for you, just try planting some native flowers- hummingbirds will benefit from flowers like a cardinal flower or columbine.
