KSAAT to Host Third Addiction Conference in Knox County

MOUNT VERNON- The Knox Substance Abuse Action Team (KSAAT) is hosting its third Knox Addiction Conference August 6th and 7th at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University in hopes of educating the community and its professionals about topics such as medical marijuana, needle exchange programs, and the science of addiction in the brain. While the conference has several community sessions to highlight what is happening right here in Knox County, it is not just for those in Knox County. KSAAT invites other communities to attend so we can share ideas and collaborate on programs that work.

The conference will also host middle school and high school aged students for sessions on leadership and substance abuse prevention. The highlight this year will be former OSU football player Maurice Clarett. Following his own battle with addiction, Clarett founded the “Red Zone”, providing counseling and housing services for adults struggling with addiction, as well as behavioral services for adolescents, and even summer camps to keep kids out of trouble. The conference is free for all students.

“In previous years KSAAT has hosted over 300 attendees from all over the country,” stated Emily Morrison, KSAAT Adult Committee Chair, “Our community is fortunate to have such a quality program to bring people and resources together to fight the battle against addiction.”
