Brown Statement on the President’s Proposed 2020 Budget

Senator Says President Trump’s Budget is a Betrayal of Working People

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today blasted the Trump administration’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2020. President Trump’s budget proposes significant cuts to programs that will negatively affect hardworking Ohioans. Brown committed to fighting these cuts and securing Ohio priorities throughout the budget process.

“Instead of investing in Ohio communities so they can grow and create jobs, President Trump is asking Ohioans to pay for permanent tax cuts for millionaires by slashing the programs that hardworking families rely on,” said Brown. “I have always fought to ensure we are making critical investments in our communities and I will continue fighting for Ohio priorities throughout this budget process.”

President Trump’s budget would:

– Make the Republican 2017 tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires permanent, while drastically cutting critical safety net programs

– Repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and replace it with a plan similar to the Graham-Cassidy proposal – when this bill was proposed in 2017, it was estimated 32 million people would lose their health insurance as a result

– Slash roughly $219 billion in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits over a decade, which hungry Ohioans rely on to feed their families

– Cut funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative by 90 percent – roughly $270 million

– Cut $9 billion over ten years to Farm Bill conservation programs, including those used by Ohio farmers to reduce runoff and protect Lake Erie.

– Cut more than $1.4 trillion to the Medicaid program over 10 years

– Slash seniors benefits through the Medicare program by hundreds of billions over a decade

– Cut National Institute of Health (NIH) funding by more than $4 billion

– Eliminate funding for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership and the Economic Development Agency

– Cut workforce training programs and employment services at the Department of Labor by $1.4 billion

– Eliminate subsidized student loans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness

– Fund a $5 billion per year tax credit for backdoor private school vouchers through the “Education Freedom Scholarship”
