Birds and Their Nests

You probably already know why birds make nests – to provide a safe spot to incubate eggs and raise the young after they hatch. Without a nest, eggs could roll away or fall to the ground, get smashed, and be vulnerable to predators. But do you know that there are different kinds of nests made by different species of birds?

A nest can be high in a tree, on the ground (sometimes underground!), or anywhere in between. Now that most birds are done raising their young for the summer, you might come across old, used nests while exploring outdoors.
