Freshwater Bryozoan

Have you ever seen this bizarre, jelly-like mass in the water while out boating or fishing? This mass was recently found in Highlandtown Lake in Columbiana County. At about fourteen inches in diameter, it might look like some sort of freshwater jellyfish at a glance. But it is actually a freshwater bryozoan called Pectinatella magnifica (“magnificent bryozoan”).

Like other species of bryozoans (also known as moss animals), it is made up of individual microscopic aquatic invertebrates called zooids. These masses are typically found in calm waters like freshwater lakes, ponds, and swamps.
