Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Eat a Bug!

The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County will host it’s popular “Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Eat a Bug!” booth at the Kenyon College Brown Environmental Center “Keep It Wild” Earth Day on Saturday, April 21, noon to 4 pm. The free event will be at BFEC, 9781 Laymon Road, Gambier.

Stop by our display co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library to sample one of our “delicacies”–ants, scorpions, superworms, mealworms, crickets, and  grasshoppers (chapulines). Insects have been a food staple and natural protein source for centuries in cultures around the world. All tasters will receive an “I Ate a Bug” sticker for taking a walk on the wild side.

Guests can also enjoy live music and tasty treats from the Truckin’ Delicious food truck. Local goods, including fresh eggs, native flowers and honey from local farms and small businesses will be available for purchase. Those looking for a more hands-on Earth Day celebration can participate in a number of activities including building bluebird boxes, bat houses, and homes for native bumblebees, and observing live animals from the Columbus Zoo and several wildlife centers.
