Student Bailiff Position Available

STUDENT BAILIFF POSITION DESCRIPTION AND AGREEMENT
1. Presence—We need you on Mondays from noon to 4 p.m., and on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If your schedule allows, we can use you on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., when there is a jury trial.
2. Qualifications—You must pass a background check and a drug test and be a full or part time student.
3. Transportation—You must provide your own transportation to and from Court. Your vehicle must be covered by liability insurance, or your operation of that vehicle must be so covered. You must have a valid driver’s license with no points, if you drive yourself to Court.
4. Public Information and Confidentiality—Most of the Court’s case files and proceedings are open to the public for observation, inspection and copy. There are, however, some things you may hear, read or observe that include confidential information. Therefore, do not divulge any investigative reports that are included in the case files before the case comes to trial or a plea of guilty or no contest is entered; anything in a probation report; and any sensitive information about the Court. Any questions of confidentiality should be directed to the Judge.
5. Activities—You will:
     a. Primarily, assist the Bailiff during criminal/traffic initial appearance sessions, each week, and this consists of:
          I. familiarizing yourself with the needed forms (both location and content);
          II. learning how to use and arrange courtroom equipment; microphones; television and video equipment; audio equipment, etc.; and
          III. escorting parties to the Clerk’s Office and Probation Department for processing;
     b. Seek out and assist the other Court employees.
     c. Help the Judge when asked to do so.
     d. If practical, observe trials.
6. “Employee”—You are a Court employee, even though you are not paid. As such:
     a. Wear business casual attire, subject to the approval of the Judge.
     b. You may move freely about the Court with proper photo Id. that will be provided.
     c. You may ask questions and offer suggestions.
     d. Refer to the Judge or Acting Judge as “Judge”, “Your Honor” or “Judge (last name)”.
     e. If your philosophy of the law is different than the Court’s, do not be concerned unless you feel so strongly that you cannot perform your internship properly.
7. At the end of your term as Student Bailiff (up to twelve weeks), you will be asked to evaluate these guidelines, make suggested additions to or deletions from them and offer other suggestions for improving the program. In the future, the Judge at his discretion will provide you with references for school and employment based on your performance of the above duties.
