The Assistant Director of Public Works will ensure that daily operations within the City function safely and efficiently by planning and directing the daily work of crews engaged in maintaining City assets within the Assistant Director’s purview as outlined below:

Assistant Director for Parks/Recreation manages all City parks, including Hiawatha Water Park, and oversees all City park programs. This position works with the Shade Tree Commission as necessary. All Assistant Directors for Public Works will take on additional duties as assigned and must be capable of lending support to other Assistant Directors for Public Works.

Characteristic duties and responsibilities
– Under the supervision of the Director of Public Works, plans, directs, and coordinates work crews.
– Meets with the Director of Public Works for the purpose of planning future projects.
– Manages all employees within the Department of Public Works.
– Oversees the assignment of duties and work schedules for all employees and approves overtime.
– Assembles information, which will assist in recommending new projects or maintenance activities to the Director of Public Works.
– Orders supplies as needed.
– May personally operate any departmental equipment when needed to accomplish required work.
– Inspects all progress and upon completion for conformation to plans, specifications, and instructions.
– Oversee, approve, and be responsible for the reports and records of the department and performs related tasks as required in the absence of the Director.
– Investigates complaints received from property owners and the public concerning the work of City crews.
– Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others and to have knowledge of and compliance with OSHA regulations connected with job responsibilities.
– Attend City Council and Board/Commission meetings as required.
– Evaluates and disciplines subordinates as necessary.
– Other related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
1. Basic literacy and math
2. Materials used and methods and practices followed in public parks and facility maintenance and repair work.
Skilled in:
1. Safely operating various hand and power tools, motorized vehicles, and heavy equipment.
2. Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job.

17. Satisfactorily pass a pre-employment and random drug screen.

Job Setting
The duties of this position will be performed throughout the City of Mount Vernon. The incumbent may encounter any type of environmental conditions: hot, cold, damp, inside, outside, underground, wet, humid, dry, noisy, dirty, greasy, air-conditioned, sudden temperature changes, etc. The incumbent will be expected to work alone, around others, under stress, under minimal supervision, and under deadlines.

Supervision Given and Received
Shall be under the direct supervision of the Director of Public Works. Incumbant shall supervise and be responsible for oral and written instructions to other Public Works personnel.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
1. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in public works
2. Must have a valid Ohio Drivers License or the ability to obtain one.
3. A highschool diploma or GED.
4. A current CDL for all types of city equipment for which employee has responsibility.
5. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with City officials, associates and general public.
6. A self-motivated, honest and trustworthy individual that has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and other personnel.
7. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
8. Ability to manage multiple projects and/or assignments.
9. Ability to establish and meet deadlines.
10. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
11. Effective oral and written communication skills.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00 – $68,000.00 per year
