Kenyon College is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to serve as Assistant Managing Editor, Kenyon Review. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Assistant Managing Editor provides essential support for the KR’s web and print production, editorial activities, and marketing. This remote position is part-time, without benefits, and will work a flexible schedule for a total of 15-19 hours per week. The position also offers room for advancement depending on the interests and abilities of the superior candidate. The hourly rate of pay is $24.00.

Essential Functions

  • Assist with populating The Kenyon Review website with archival and newly published literary content.
  • Assist with designing, creating, and sending marketing emails for the organization.
  • Complete additional graphic design work for KR’s social media and website.
  • Manage timely special projects as mutually defined by the Editor and Managing Editor; projects may include special publications, website development, etc.
  • Coordinate outreach and conduct market research for contest, special features, guest edited folios, events and conferences, and fellowships.

Other functions

  • May pursue, book, and design advertising, on an as-needed basis.
  • May assist in print production using Adobe InDesign, on an as-needed basis.
  • May read and evaluate submissions using Submittable, depending on the candidate’s experience and interest and on as needed.

  • Strong interpersonal skills as well as persistence, creativity, and the ability to work independently as well as in a teamwork setting.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing time sensitive assignments.
  • Interest in continued education and willingness to learn new skills, including, but not limited to, software, content management systems, and web applications.

Working Conditions

While work at The Kenyon Review office typically takes place between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, this remote, part-time position is meant to accommodate the schedule of someone who may have additional work commitments. Outside of weekly standing meetings with the Managing Editor and the occasional special project requiring further meetings and real-time collaboration, most work can be completed outside of regular business hours if necessary.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (preferably in the humanities) or 2–4 years of related experience. Experience with HTML, content management systems (WordPress), Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator is desirable. Experience with Adobe InDesign and Submittable is preferred but not required. Must be adept at word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word and Excel). Strong copyediting skills are an asset. Demonstrated experience in project management and working in teams is required.
