The Delaware Municipal Court Has Proven Success With Specialized Veterans Treatment Docket
DELAWARE, OH – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) hosted a roundtable discussion with veterans and advocates about the Delaware County Veterans Treatment Court, also called the Mission Court.
“Too many Ohio veterans are in our criminal justice system for underlying mental and physical health reasons. It’s why specialized dockets for veterans, like the one created here in Delaware County, matter, and can make a real difference,” said Brown. “I’ll continue to work towards special docket courts throughout the state to meet veterans where they are. When veterans make a commitment to serve our country, we make a commitment to support them upon their return.”
Recognizing that many veterans may return to civilian life with serious physical and mental trauma that may lead to criminal issues, the Mission Court ensures veterans receive the specialized treatment and services that they need and have earned. According to the court, the program increases veterans’ chances of success with targeted programs and treatments, and through interacting with other veterans, to ensure that those who have served receive the services they deserve.
“I am very proud of our Mission Court Docket. The saying, ‘it takes a village,’ is very true. The success of the Mission Court Docket comes from the mentors, support of fellow veterans, and unconventional therapies like Stockhands Horses for Healing and Save a Warrior,” said Jennifer Stamolis, the Special Dockets Coordinator for the Delaware Municipal Court. “I am so thankful for the amount of support the community has given the docket. I’m very grateful Senator Sherrod Brown took time to visit our court to learn about our docket. I am honored to share information about our docket and insight into veterans’ needs.”
Brown has consistently supported funding for specialized treatment courts at the federal level and has supported programs at the Departments of Justice and Veterans Affairs to support these services for veterans.
