5th Anniversary Photo Contest

Are you and/or your child a budding photographer? In celebration of your talent and the 5th anniversary of Ariel-Foundation Park’s opening, we invite you to share the beautiful images you’ve taken at Ariel-Foundation Park. Due to COVID-19, we thought it was in everyone’s best interest to limit the contest to digital images so that we are not handling actual photos or other artwork submitted. We look forward to seeing your talent!

Categories:
• Youth – ages 16 and under
• Adult – ages 17 and up

Medium:
• Digital photography (DSLR, phone, scanned hard copy photos, drone images)

Details:
• Youth entry fee: $10
• Adult entry fee: $15
• Limit of 3 images per person
• Must be amateur photographer (professional = makes 50% or more of income from photography)

• Time span: Must have been taken between July 4, 2015, and Aug. 31, 2020.
• Minimum size: 2000 x pixels on the long side
• Size: Files should be no larger than 10MB (no larger than 5,000 pixels in the long direction)
• File format: Must be in JPG format
• Color mode: Must be in RGB or black and white (grayscale) or a combination of color and black/white
• Cropping: Photos may be cropped as desired
• Editing: If a photo has had “significant” editing, filters applied, etc., it must appear in the Altered Images category. Please see additional details in “What to Enter” below.
• Information: Photo must be submitted with all appropriate information requested on the online submission form

Prizes:
• $100 youth scholarship for youth Best in Show
• $250 cash prize for adult Best in Show
• Second Place in both adult/youth categories
• Honorable Mentions awarded accordingly (no more than 10% of submissions)

RULES:

Who May Enter:
The Youth category is open to individuals ages 16 and under. The Adult category is open to individuals ages 17 and above. Individuals affiliated with Ariel-Foundation Park/Foundation Park Conservancy, including employees, trustees, and their immediate families (children, parents, siblings and spouses) and others living in their households, are not eligible for any prize. Ariel-Foundation Park will determine winners’ eligibility in its sole discretion.

What To Enter:
Any photograph entered must have been shot by the entrant at the park somewhere between July 4, 2015, and Aug. 31, 2020. The entrant certifies that he/she is the sole creator and copyright owner of the submitted photography.

Cropped photos are eligible. We do not accept digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered photos, except for those entered in the Altered Images category. Minor adjustments including the removal of sensor dust or scratches on scans of negatives, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast, tonight, slight color adjustment and conversion to grayscale are acceptable. The addition and subtraction of objects is not permitted. If the judges determine that a photographer has altered his/her image, they reserve the right to move the image to Altered Images or to disqualify it. Image composites including HDR and stitched panoramas will be judged as Altered Images

For a photo in which a person is recognizable, you must be prepared to provide a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent/guardian, to Ariel-Foundation Park upon request. A sample model release is available here.

If the entrant is unable to provide all required releases, Ariel-Foundation Park in its sole discretion reserves the right to disqualify the submission, seek to secure the required releases, or permit the submission to remain in the contest.

Photos that violate or infringe upon another person’s rights, including but not limited to copyright, are not eligible. Photos that contain sexually explicit, nude, obscene, violent or other objectionable or inappropriate content, as determined by Ariel-Foundation in its sole discretion, are ineligible for this contest.

How to Enter:

You may submit up to 3 photographs. Each entry requires a separate entry form/payment. In order to be displayed in our online gallery without being stretched or distorted, photographs must be submitted in .jpeg or .jpg format, edited for web in RGB color space, at least 2,000 pixels wide and no larger than 10 MB.

We do not accept photographs submitted through the mail and do not accept more than one contestant per e-mail address. High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable. Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible. Ariel-Foundation Park may collect a photograph’s metadata upon entry.

You retain your rights to your photograph; however, by entering the contest, you grant Ariel-Foundation Park (and those authorized by the Park) a royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive license to publicly display, distribute, reproduce and create derivative works of the entries, in whole or in part, in any media now existing or later developed, for any purpose, including, but not limited to, advertising and promotion of the park and its website, commercial products, Ariel-Foundation Park publications. Any photograph reproduced will include a photographer credit as feasible. Ariel-Foundation Park will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.

Entry Deadline:
The contest begins on August 1, 2020. All entries must be received by 5:00 PM on August 31, 2020.

Judging/Prizes:
Photo entries will be judged based on creativity, quality, originality, and overall impact.

Ariel-Foundation Park and contest judges will select finalists in each category and, from those, will select Best in Show adult entry ($250 cash prize) and Best in Show youth entry ($100 cash prize). Judges will also select second place overall (adult and youth) and honorable mentions from the submissions (no more than 10 percent of the total number of submissions). All winners should be notified no later than Sept. 18.

The public can vote on our website for the People’s Choice winner as of Sept. 1.

Ariel-Foundation Park will notify winners via the contact information provided at the time of entry; Ariel-Foundation Park may disqualify anyone who fails to respond to the notification within five business days. Please do not contact us about the status of judging.

Online Features:
Ariel-Foundation Park may select photos for highlight on its website or display in a publicly accessible contest archive. Such selections will be made in Ariel-Foundation Park’s sole discretion.

Conditions of Entry:
All entrants hold Ariel-Foundation Park and their respective regents, directors, officers, employees, emeriti, fellows, interns, research associates, and volunteers (the “Indemnified Parties”) harmless from and against all claims of any nature arising in connection with entrant’s participation in the contest and acceptance or use of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not liable for any costs, damages, injuries, or other claims incurred as a result of entrants’ participation in the contest or winner’s acceptance and usage of a prize. The Indemnified Parties are not responsible for incomplete or misdirected entries, technical or network malfunctions or failures, or causes beyond their control. Entrants are solely responsible for their entries. Entrants may not submit materials that introduce any software viruses, worms or other programs designed to damage software, hardware or telecommunications equipment or are off-topic, partisan-political, contain advertising, nudity, personal attacks or expletives, or is otherwise abusive, threatening, unlawful, harassing, discriminatory, libelous, obscene, false, sexually explicit, or that infringes on the rights of any third party.

The contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law. Ariel-Foundation Park reserves the right to cancel the contest or modify these rules at its discretion. In the event of a dispute regarding the winners, Ariel-Foundation Park reserves the right to award or not award the prizes in its sole discretion. Ariel-Foundation Park reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose entry or conduct appears in any way to: inhibit the enjoyment of others; tamper with the competition; violate these rules or other applicable law or regulation; infringe on the rights of third parties; or act in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner.

Decisions of Ariel-Foundation Park are final and binding.
