Turkey Festival Ends – Officer Tom Cottrell Children’s Scholarship 5K Continues

Greetings everyone,

First, thanks for all of the community, business, media, and volunteer efforts over the past years to make the Danville-Howard Turkey Festival a great success!!! It was started by the Danville Fireman’s Assn. many years ago, and has been a staple of early summer activity in the Danville and Howard area. The Lions Club assumed the leadership role several years ago, to try to invigorate the event.

From our viewpoint – The 2017 Festival was musically great, food vendors were good, weather was above average, inflatable rides were above average, parking and cleanup crews were awesome, but otherwise, the vendor tent participation and attendance was weak, community attendance was sparse, we were able to not organize the auction, and so on. Simply put, the financial dynamics will not permit the event to continue as it is currently structured.

So, from our perspective – the community has spoken!

Remaining TF funds will likely go, at least in part, to the Cottrell children’s scholarship fund, which is a primary fundraising project for the Danville Lions Club. Other worthy Lions projects may also receive funds.

However, make sure everyone knows that the Danville Lions Club will be continuing the Cottrell 5K race on the Saturday of Father’s Day weekend, to benefit his children’s scholarship fund.  A restricted account trust has been established dedicated solely for that purpose. The Club has raised almost $18,000 to this purpose so far, with a goal of at least $30,000.

We appreciate everyone’s efforts over the past years!!!

Thank you Danville-Howard community!!
