Baby Animals in the Wild Are Not Pets

The official start of spring is just a few weeks away, and that means young wildlife could start showing up in our backyards soon.

Often, the baby animal you see will be unattended by a parent. This is not something human parents would do, but it is completely normal behavior for wildlife parents. Unless something seems amiss, remember to keep your distance and leave it alone. Human intervention is always a wild animal’s LAST resort for survival, NEVER its best hope.

It can be difficult to know what to do when you come across a baby animal that may or may not be injured or orphaned, so we came up with tips on what to do if you find specific wildlife species. Find a baby bird? Raccoon? Fawn? Visit wildohio.gov/staywild for exactly what to do, and what NOT to do!
