Twenty nine students were recognized at the Crunch Out Obesity Award Celebration, on Saturday, January 21st 2017, at the YMCA in Mount Vernon. Lisa Rutter, the United Way Coordinator, presented awards to each of the classroom essay winners as they took the stage.
Crunch Out Obesity is a 6 week program that is organized by the United Way, involving nutrition and physical activity. There were nearly 648 students throughout the Knox County Schools and St Vincent’s that participated between October and November 2016. East Knox and Centerburg Schools joined the program this year, adding their 3rd grade classes to the 4th graders from all of the other schools.
“How I am Living Healthy” was the title given to the students for writing their essays. To be eligible, each of the students were required to complete at least 3 weeks of daily journals following the 5-2-1-0 rule. The parents and siblings of the students also supported and played an active role by stepping up to the same challenge as the contenders, sharing the same dietary and exercise goals. A panel of community members read, reviewed, and helped in the selection process.
Although the program was coordinated by the United Way, many other partners gave their support including the YMCA of Mount Vernon, Knox Community Hospital and the Knox County Health Department.
All classroom winners received two YMCA day passes while the school winners received a one month YMCA family membership. The overall winner of the essay competition, Laura Page and her family, will enjoy a 3 month YMCA family membership.
