RecoveryOhio to Hold Statewide Training to Combat Substance Use Disorder

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – Today, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that RecoveryOhio, Addiction Policy Forum, and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services are teaming up to host a free, statewide training to help those affected by addiction on November 9.

The program, called enCompass, is a comprehensive resource for navigating substance use disorder. Funded by The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, enCompass is a resource for family members who are trying to navigate the complex world of addiction while helping loved ones achieve recovery.

The EnCompass program has already been helping families around Ohio since April 2021 by holding individual county trainings. On November 9, enCompass will have its first statewide, 8-hour virtual training session.

Participants will learn from six main subject areas, the signs and symptoms of addiction, how to start the conversation, getting an assessment and treatment options, how to set healthy boundaries, and how to access recovery support about the medications to treat addiction.

“EnCompass is a free tool not only for those who are struggling with addiction, but for family members and loved ones as well,” Governor Mike DeWine said. “The road to recovery can be challenging, but with resources like this training, the healing process can begin.”

Attendees for the trainings can include families, friends, caregivers, clergy, law enforcement, first responders, healthcare providers, employers, educators, community-based service providers, and anyone else interested in learning how to respond to substance use/co-occurring disorders.

“Like CPR training, the course is designed to build the skills to support and respond to someone who needs help,” Addiction Policy Forum Founder and CEO, Jessica Hulsey said. “This program was developed with an Expert Review Panel composed of prominent researchers and physicians in the addiction field, and the guide was crafted with support from family members with lived experience.”

All participants receive a certificate at the completion of the course. Those interested can register for this free online training at https://recovery-ohio.brand.live/statewide-encompass-training.

Governor Mike DeWine created the RecoveryOhio initiative to coordinate the work of state departments, boards, and commissions by leveraging Ohio’s existing resources and seeking new opportunities. While engaging local governments, coalitions, and task forces, RecoveryOhio’s goals are to create a system to help make treatment available to Ohioans in need, provide support services for those in recovery and their families, offer direction for the state’s prevention and education efforts, and work with local law enforcement to provide resources to fight illicit drugs at the source.
