Mount Vernon, Ohio— Free tax preparation assistance is available at United Way of Knox County through the financial stability initiative and new partnership with the IRS. Before partnering with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, United Way offered tax preparation assistance services through the Ohio Benefit Bank. In tax year 2019, United Way tax volunteers assisted 357 clients in filing federal income tax returns through the IRS VITA program. This year, the program will only offer appointments in a curbside form, where taxpayers remain in their vehicle throughout the appointment instead of coming into the office.
“Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we feel we must protect both our staff and clients and using a curbside drop-off service does both,” said Executive Director Kelly Brenneman.
“The United Way of Knox County wants to make life a little easier for workers by alerting them about a special tax credit that can put money in their pockets. The goal is to increase the financial stability of residents by offering this free service and helping them claim tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Care Tax Credit when possible. The EITC helps individuals and families with low to moderate income keep more of what they earned. This is money that can be used to purchase necessities and boost savings.” Replied Brenneman.
Brenneman also noted “This service for low to moderate income individuals with adjusted gross income limits of $56,000 per year.”
United Way of Knox County offers free tax preparation assistance from IRS-certified volunteers. They will ask needed questions to find out if you qualify for the service as well as the EITC and other refundable credits. They also prepare and e-file (file electronically) your return at no cost to you. To set up a curbside appointment, phone 740.397.5721, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. United Way offers evening and Saturday appointments on a first call, first serve basis.
