U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) – ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs – today released the following statement following the announcement that the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) would extend the suspension of foreclosures on FHA-insured and Fannie Mae- and Freddie Mac-backed mortgages until at least August 31, 2020. While the announcement extends protections for homeowners, millions of renters, including those in FHA-insured and Fannie Mae- and Freddie Mac-backed properties, could still face eviction beginning on July 24th without action from FHFA or Congress.
“I applaud HUD and FHFA for taking action to protect homeowners from unnecessary health risks in the face of the ongoing pandemic and economic crisis. Unfortunately, this announcement does nothing to protect millions of renters whose health and financial wellbeing are at risk. HUD and FHFA should immediately extend the eviction moratorium for renters and work with Congress to provide vital rental assistance to keep renters in their homes during and after this pandemic.”
