LOUDONVILLE, Ohio — Discover the aquatic critters roaming our streams and how they help measure the water quality of Ohio’s rivers. Join the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves to learn more about stream quality monitoring on Wednesday, May 24, 6:30 p.m. at Mohican State Park.
This program is a great introduction to learning more about Ohio’s Scenic Rivers Program as well as the first step in becoming a water quality monitoring volunteer for ODNR. People will have the option to wade in the Clear Fork stem of the Mohican River; it is recommended that all attendees wear closed-toe shoes.
The Mohican State Scenic River, including the lower stem of Clear Fork, joined the Ohio State Scenic River system in 2006. Its exceptional water quality is due in part to its richly forested streambanks. Trees filter water, provide flood control, keep the water cool, and provide important habitat for both animals who live in and outside of the water. The Mohican River and surrounding lands are a popular destination for outdoor recreation including fishing, hiking, and paddling.
The event will be held at the Class A shelter house, located near the entrance of Mohican’s campground. Volunteers can pre-register by contacting Christine Szymanski at Christine.Szymanski@dnr.ohio.gov.
