Brown Has Long Fought to Lower Health Care Costs for all Americans
CLEVELAND, OH – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined the Protect Our Care “Lower Costs, Better Care” tour in Cleveland to discuss how the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which Brown helped to write and pass. The legislation will lower health costs for Ohioans.
“Because of the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act – we’re making sure hardworking families are getting the help they need,” said Brown. “We’re making health care more affordable, and we’re finally taking on the drug companies to lower drug prices. We know prescription drugs are some of the most overpriced goods many Ohioans are forced to pay for each month.”
“By cutting prescription drug costs, expanding coverage, increasing access, and addressing inequities in care, the Inflation Reduction Act will have profound impacts across our state,” said Joanne Pickrell, State Director, Protect Our Care Ohio. “We thank Senator Brown and Congresswoman Brown for championing this legislation — and we are incredibly fortunate for Senator Brown’s long-standing leadership and efforts to stop drug company price gouging and to make prescription medication more affordable.”
The Inflation Reduction Act includes several provisions to lower health care costs for Ohioans, including:
- Directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to negotiate lower prescription drug costs for Medicare beneficiaries to ensure older Americans get the best possible deal on high-cost drugs;
- Extends enhanced premium tax credits for three years to lower health insurance costs for those Ohioans who purchase insurance on the health insurance marketplace;
- Caps older Ohioans’ out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 per year; and
- Limits insulin copays for older Ohioans and Ohioans with disabilities to $35/month.
For years, Senator Brown has led efforts to allow Medicare to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies and to lower drug prices for all Americans.
