Brown’s Resolution Would Affirm Senate’s Commitment to Social Security; Senate Republican Plan Would Strip Hard-Earned Benefits, Attempt to End the Program
WASHINGTON, DC – September 28, 2022 – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chair of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions, and Family Policy, hosted a news conference call as he leads efforts to protect, and strengthen, Social Security benefits for seniors. This comes after several Republican members in the House and Senate have made proposals to undermine the retirement security Americans have earned.
“Ohioans pay into Social Security with every paycheck, and they want to know they can count on it when they retire,” said Brown. “That shouldn’t be partisan – Social Security is one of the most popular and most unifying institutions in the country. Ohioans should not have to worry with every election that politicians are going to try to take away the retirement they earned.”
Brown as joined on the news conference call by Ohioan W. Dean Hudson who retired after working 27 years for AT&T. She says she relies on Social Security as her main source of income.
“Social Security is paramount to my day-to-day existence,” said Howard. “It is the only dependable source of income for me and a multitude of others.”
Senator Brown is working to not only protect Social Security, but to strengthen it. Tomorrow, he and his colleagues will introduce a resolution affirming the Senate’s commitment to protecting and expanding Social Security, so that future generations can continue to rely on its bedrock promise. In July, Brown and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) urged the Social Security Administration to incorporate children in ongoing outreach efforts, to help families eligible for Supplemental Security Income. Brown has also urged the Biden Administration to nominate a permanent Social Security Commissioner and has continued his effort to reform and update the SSI program to allow beneficiaries to meaningfully save for emergencies.
Yesterday, several Senators joined Brown in sending a letter to President Biden outlining the importance of Social Security, and Brown gave a speech fighting for Social Security on the Senate floor.
