Lake Erie Double Trippers Threaten Our Superior Fish Hatchery

Daily limits exist to ensure sustainability over the long term, and wildlife officers work tirelessly to protect our natural resources. Recently officers in our Lake Erie unit were able to observe 4 different boats double tripping, 2 of which switched ramps in an effort to cover their illegal activity. Officers found violations on all 4 boats and issued 13 summonses and 34 walleye were seized as evidence.
The walleye daily limit on Lake Erie is six fish per angler with a 15-inch minimum length limit. Walleye hatch success has been exceptional for six of the past eight years. In 2022, anglers will mostly catch abundant 2- to 4-year-old-fish ranging from 15 to 22 inches.
