Biden Announces Move to Increase Sale of Higher Ethanol Gasoline Following Brown Letter

Long-Overdue Updates will Help Reduce Prices, Support Ohio Farmers and American Biofuel Industry, & Help Reduce Our Reliance on Foreign Energy Sources

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the below statement following the announcement from President Biden that he’ll suspend a federal rule preventing the sale of higher ethanol blend gasoline this summer.
“This is a smart move by the Biden-Harris administration to help reduce prices for Ohio drivers. Relying on American farmers for clean, reliable biofuels is a better energy solution than depending on foreign sources, and will help drive down fuel costs,” said Brown. “Committing to this policy now will send an important signal of certainty and stability to gas stations who sell E15 currently or are considering selling it in the year ahead.”
Earlier this month, Brown, along with U.S. Sens. John Thune (R-SD) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requesting the EPA update its greenhouse gas modeling for biofuels and adopt the Argonne National Lab’s Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) model. These long-overdue updates would permit consistent comparison between petroleum-based fuels, natural gas systems, electric generation, and renewable fuels – which will help policymakers, companies, and consumers assess the ability of a given technology or feedstock to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Home-grown fuels assessed by the GREET model will also help the U.S. reduce its reliance on foreign oil.
