BBB Tip: How to Hire a DJ for Your Next Event

The right DJ plays a huge part in making your wedding, corporate gathering, or party a success. Professional DJs bring the equipment, handle sound set up, know how to read a crowd, and can even act as an emcee. Here’s what to consider when picking a DJ for your next event.

Tips for hiring the perfect DJ

  • Decide what you want from a DJ. Do you want a nightclub DJ who will pack the dance floor and play the latest hits? Or do you need a wedding DJ who will please a range of ages and act as your emcee. Deciding on what type of DJ you want will help you figure out where to start your search.
  • Shop around. Search for BBB Accredited DJs (filter for AB only) and ask your friends and family members for their recommendations. Then, interview and get pricing from at least three DJs.
  • Do your homework Request a list of references from your potential DJs. Ask the references about their experience and if the event went as planned. Also, check out your DJ’s website and social media accounts. If their online presence is unprofessional, your DJ’s in-person performance may be the same.
  • Does your venue have an in-house DJ? Don’t feel obligated to use them. Some venues offer in-house DJs in their event packages, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best DJ for the job, advises Wedding Ideas Magazine.
  • Make sure your DJ has the right equipment. Home stereo equipment isn’t cut out for a big venue, so make sure your DJ owns professional grade equipment. Check with your venue to confirm what the DJ needs to bring vs. what they provide.
  • Ask about music selection and song requests. Make sure you are on the same page as your DJ when it comes to musical taste. Ask your potential DJ if you can give them a list of your preferences, including must-play or don’t play songs, recommends The Knot. Also, work out whether your DJ should take requests – and if you should approve any requests – during the event.
  • Include all details in the contract: Be sure to get all the finalized details in a written contract including: the final price, payment schedule, and all services that are included in the package. Should anything happen, and you don’t need the DJ anymore, find out the details of their refund policy.
