It is a state or condition of sluggishness and inactivity. This is exhibited by reptiles (such as snakes, or lizards). During winter or extended periods of low temperatures, this is not a true hibernation rather than just a cold-blooded version of slowing down. Their heart rate and breathing slow down significantly as does their digestion. They even completely stop eating.
