PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Mt Vernon Environmental, Health, & Safety Lead is responsible for building a plant culture with an unconditional stance on safety and responsible environmental management. She/he will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of critical safety & health processes/programs/procedures in order to achieve a zero-injury environment. The successful candidate will provide leadership and apply technical abilities to engage employees at all levels of the organization in order to develop and sustain world-class safety and environmental process. This role is a critical member of the Natural Leadership Team (NLT) providing guidance and coaching in the areas of safety and environmental stewardship to all plant members.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Live the OC Safety and Sustainability stands, adhere to the safety responsibilities

  • The Environmental & Safety Lead will establish and accomplish aggressive personal, and facility goals that align with division and Owens Corning corporate goals. These goals will reflect a total commitment to developing a strong safety culture, achieving a world-class safety process and the environmentally responsible operation of the facility.
  • Effectively communicate Owens Corning’s stand on safety throughout the Plant to ensure all employees believe in and behave in a manner that supports our belief that all accidents are preventable, safety is everyone’s responsibility, and that working safely is a condition of employment at Owens Corning.
  • Complete all required safety training.
  • Adhere to all plant and position-specific safety policies, procedures and standards
  • Educate team members on safe operations of new processes or modifications.

Metrics

  • Develop and manage plant or department Strategic Action Plans and deliver on all commitments
  • Personal Safety Action Plan (PSAP) – implement and review with leader annually

  • Leading and executing Safety & Environmental in the plant
  • Lead and support safety initiatives and processes to drive towards an injury free culture.
  • Lead and support environmental initiatives and processes to drive towards zero NOVs.
  • Incorporate the safety stand and safe improvements into all people-related initiatives.
  • Maintain a leadership presence on the plant floor, influence employee and leadership behaviors, and fully engage employees in the safety process.
  • Enhance plant knowledge, engagement, conditions and stability for OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and lead the team to VPP certification through sustainable programs and processes, including a culture of employee ownership, incident reporting/risk reduction and continuous improvement.
  • Enroll and engage the entire workforce to build a powerful safety culture.
  • Empowers employees to prevent or stop and correct unsafe acts or work conditions
  • Advise and guide the Natural Leadership Team (NLT) in developing and implementing a risk-ranked strategic plan, prioritize and advocate capital/resource requests, and advise the leadership team on all aspects of environmental requirements and responsibilities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of all critical EH&S processes, programs, and procedures including those related to Process Safety Management (PSM).
  • Sets and accomplishes critical metrics regularly to ensure continuous improvement in the processes that lead to a 100% engaged safety culture at the plant.
  • Proactively participate in and lead efforts around hazard identification and risk reduction across the plant.
  • Responsible for review and continuous improvement of plant TPM efforts, SIF programs, and/or other Management Systems

  • Safety Metrics – RIR/TIR, First Aids, Minor Injury No Treatments (MINT), Near Misses, SAFE Management, and Critical 6

  • Increased momentum in Near Miss and Hazard ID Reporting

  • Oversee legal compliance and adherence to OC policies and processes

Lead and manage visible risk and the processes for adherence to OSHA regulations. Provide expert technical support in identifying and resolving critical regulatory issues.

  • Oversee safety policies, systems and processes to ensure State and Federal, Insulation business unit and local compliance as required.
  • Ensure effective management of all safety incidents to avoid litigation, third party and union intervention
  • For any safety incidents, ensure proper investigation, root cause analysis, communication and aggressive action planning and execution to prevent future repeat incidents across any OC locations.
  • Possess working knowledge of the plant environmental permits and systems.
  • Metrics:
    • Recordable incident rate (RIR)
    • % closure on safety incident corrective actions within 30 days
    • Deficiencies in internal H&S audits
    • Prevention of the reoccurrence of similar injuries and incidents

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5 years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in safety related discipline required

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) qualification preferred
  • Leading change management efforts
  • Demonstrated success coaching and leading teams in a high employee empowerment culture, while training and developing technical skills in others.
  • Managing and delivering results through projects and initiatives.
  • Experience utilizing computer programs and Microsoft Office products.
