Fire and Ice 2021 – Reindeer Activity to Help Benefit Food for the Hungry!

Knox County Park District and the Millwood Church of Christ have teamed again to bring a new activity to the popular Fire and Ice event that benefits Food For The Hungry.   Fire and Ice 2021 will be held as two drive-through events, one at Wolf Run Park and one at Millwood Church of Christ. The drive-through events are scheduled for Saturday, December 11 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at both locations.
Luminaria will magically guide you through the Wolf Run Regional Park parking lot located at 17621 Yauger Road in Mount Vernon. There, Park District staff will be on hand to retrieve boxed and canned food items from your vehicle and accept monetary donations for Food For The Hungry. No need to park and leave your car as the drive-through luminaria will guide you to the drop-off point in the parking lot.  Across the county, the Millwood Church of Christ located at 10900 Millersburg Road in Howard also has luminaria to guide you through the church parking lot at a drive-through event. At this location church personnel and volunteers will be on-hand to accept canned and boxed food items and monetary donations for Food For The Hungry.

With the Reindeer in the Parks activity, we hope to generate more interest in the parks, trails and river accesses and help raise awareness for those in need in our community and specifically, raise more donations for the Food For The Hungry drive.  Here’s how it works.

The Knox County Park District is proud to partner with 11 local businesses, Food For The Hungry, Millwood Church of Christ and the Knox County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to create this activity to support Food For The Hungry and also an invitation to shop local. For more information and details for the activity including the required form and google map, visit www.knoxcountyparks.org and navigate to the “Activities” link.

Referring to the Google map, go to one of the parks and upon locating the reindeer in the park, scan the QR code, this code will then reveal a local business, directions to that business, and a coupon to utilize for holiday shopping. At the business location, a new quest begins by scanning another QR code located in the window to reveal a mystery letter to eventually solve a puzzle of mystery words. 22 stops are highlighted consisting of parks, trails, river accesses, and local businesses. Businesses do not have to be open for participation as the QR codes are located in the windows for easy accessibility.

In the spirit of holiday giving, Mrs. Claus asks Reindeer in the Parks participants to consider community outreach. She will be located at one of the stops and will direct you to the Millwood Church of Christ. At this location, you are introduced to the “Sharing Shed” and asked to bring a non-perishable item to leave for a donation to the Knox County Food for the Hungry drive.

Upon completion of locating Santa’s reindeer and solving the mystery words, participants are asked to submit the completed entries online at www.knoxcountyparks.org follow the activities link. The final step to the quest is to attend the Knox County Park District Fire and Ice event on December 11,

5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wolf Run Park and receive a participation gift, compliments of the Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Look at the Park District’s website for more details. Pick up your complimentary gift and drop off your monetary donation or food item(s) for Food For The Hungry!
