Brown Announces More than $2.3 Million in New Federal Funds to Aid Crime Prevention Across Ohio

Department of Justice Funds Will Help Secure New Equipment and Resources for Local Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 18, 2021 – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has awarded $2,358,779 to local governments across Ohio through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The Byrne JAG program helps Ohio law enforcement agencies secure critical tools and equipment to keep communities safe.

“Safe communities depend on well-trained and equipped law enforcement officers,” Brown said. “These funds will allow police in cities across Ohio to continue keeping our streets safe. This grant is a critical investment to secure new equipment and resources for the men and women who devote their lives to protecting Ohioans.”

In December 2020, Brown helped secure $484 million for the Byrne JAG program in the government funding measure passed by the Senate.

The JAG program allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training and hiring of personnel, purchasing equipment and supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice. Programs or initiatives funded by JAG may include multijurisdictional drug task forces, crime prevention, domestic violence prevention programs, courts, corrections, treatment, and justice information sharing initiatives, or any other programs aimed at reducing crime and enhancing the safety of the public and police officers.
