House Finch Eye Disease

We have been receiving updates about birds with crusty eyes again. We suspect that it is House Finch eye disease (also called Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis). House, Gold and Purple Finches will have red, swollen, runny, or crusty eyes. In extreme cases, the eyes become swollen shut and the bird becomes blind. You might observe an infected bird sitting quietly in your yard, clumsily scratching an eye against its foot or a perch. If you see one of these birds please bring them to our hospital for treatment.
Remember to clean your bird feeders weekly to help prevent the spread of diseases.
