This year, United Way of Knox County is hosting a Poverty Simulation on the morning of Thursday, October 21, 2021, at The Glenn A. Gallagher Centre. Check-in will begin at 8 am, and the simulation will take place from 9 am-11:30 am.
In the simulation, participants assumed the roles of families facing a variety of challenging, but typical circumstances. Some were homeless, others recently became unemployed, and some were suddenly faced with responsibilities like raising grandchildren. A team of community volunteers play the roles of resource providers, such as social worker, loan officer, employer, pawnbroker, grocer, utility collector, police officer, and teacher.
Poverty Simulation can mean different things to different participants. For resource providers, it can help them to better identify with the needs of families and individuals they serve each day. For community leaders, elected officials, and agency directors it can help them to create and implement policies and programs that address the issue of poverty more effectively. For anyone, it can inspire a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of Knox County residents and employees of local businesses.
United Way traditionally offers a Poverty Simulation in October, which is open to the community.
