MOUNT VERNON – September 1, 2021 – Volunteers are the lifeblood of the City of Mount Vernon. They donate their experiences, expertise and, most importantly, their time to help our institutions thrive, from parks to the arts to local government.

The City will honor three residents as 2021 Volunteers of the Year at the final First Friday of the year on Sept. 3. They are LJ Harry, Michael Percy and Trina Trainor.

“LJ, Michael and Trina represent the best of Mount Vernon,” Mayor Matt Starr said, “and there are many more like them. Volunteerism is the ultimate win-win for the community. It affords residents multiple chances to give back, while providing vital assistance to organizations that are always looking for people.”

LJ has been a police chaplain since the inception of the Mount Vernon Association of Police Chaplains in 2018.

“When I was a teenager, I saw a news piece naming Mount Vernon as Ohio’s best town,” said LJ. “No matter if the networks ever place that ribbon around our neck again, each of us can volunteer to make our City what we want it to be for our families. I love volunteering and serving our City because I love the people of our City.”

Michael is chair of the City’s Board of Zoning Appeals, and also serves as president of the Foundation Park Conservancy.

“I volunteer in the community because I feel we all have an obligation to give back in some way, to have a positive impact on a place that we all love and call our home,” said Michael.

Since 2019, Trina has been involved with the Mount Vernon Music & Arts Festival, where she now serves as co-director and board secretary.

“It is so rewarding to have the opportunity to work together with so many passionate individuals who keep music and arts alive in Mount Vernon,” said Trina. “When the curtain is drawn, the lights go on, the event comes alive – it’s magic! Get involved and be a part of the magic.”
This year’s volunteers will be honored at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 during a ceremony on the stage near the South Main Plaza’s Dog Fountain.
