HNCO is seeking an Accountant who will manage the transaction accounting and asset accounting functions of the organization including general ledger management, payroll management, asset accounting, and financial reporting. Responsibilities also include analyzing trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. The Accountant reports the organization’s finances to management and offers suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies and assumptions underlying budget forecasts. This position is also in charge of the accurate, timely completion and submission of all the billing, collections, accounts receivable, and payroll functions of the organization.

What You’ll Do:

  • Manages all daily accounting operations and accounting information systems including general ledger functions, payroll functions, asset accounting and financial reporting
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports key operating statistics through the effective utilization of information systems
  • Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information
  • Documents financial transactions, recommends actions, substantiates transactions, reconciles any discrepancies, and maintains financial security by following internal controls
  • Assists the Director of Finance with current financial status by collecting information, preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports
  • Controls the fixed and current organizational assets, ensuring that proper controls are in place to prevent loss or shrinkage
  • Assists the Director of Finance in the preparation of the annual budget and prepares budget variation reports
  • Reconciles Medicare quarterly reports produced by the fiscal intermediary with the billing information system, and assists the Director of Finance in the preparation of the annual Medicare cost report
  • Prepares/assists with all requested documentation for annual internal and external audits; maintains professional relationships with outside auditors, banks, government surveyors, etc.; arranges for audits as required and appropriate
  • Ensures maximum third-party reimbursement through efficient billing and collections operations, effective accounts receivable management and a thorough understanding of cost reimbursement principles
  • Accurately processes and bills Medicare, Medicaid, private payer and patient claims in accordance with payer requirements and organization policy
  • Maintains accurate records on all insurance contracts and completes all insurance requirements
  • Maintains comprehensive working knowledge of payer contracts and ensures that payers are billed according to contract provisions and obtain new payer contracts as needed
  • Maintains comprehensive working knowledge of government billing regulations including Medicare and Medicaid regulations and serves as a resource for appropriate organization personnel
  • Monitors aged accounts receivable and resubmits bills to overdue accounts, requests to write-off within reason uncollectable accounts, and prepares bad debt reports for the Director of Finance
  • Collaborates with the Director of Finance in successfully reconciling the billing system reports with the general ledger
  • Supervises and reconciles cash receipts and bank deposits according to policy
  • Maintains accurate 403b files; records and corresponds with 403b Administrator as needed
  • Manages payroll practices and assures compliance with state and federal regulations, including wages, salaries and benefit regulations in conjunction with the payroll service company
  • Accurately enters employee and payroll data, including timesheet information, into the payroll information system; prepares employee paychecks including withholding calculations accurately and in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations; works with the management team in resolving employee payroll problems
  • Ensures financial record systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and in compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations and CHAP accreditation standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Finance required, or equivalent experience.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible accounting experience in a hospice or healthcare environment preferred
  • One to three years of healthcare billing experience required; hospice billing experience, preferred
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license with current automobile insurance and reliable transportation accessible for travel while on HNCO business

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures and principles
  • Intermediate understanding of accounting and reporting standards, gaining experience in researching as it relates to accounting issues
  • Experience with creating financial statements
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process
  • Awareness of business trends
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent math skills
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office products)
