MOUNT VERNON, Ohio— Through a special summer grant, Food For The Hungry aimed to help organizations that fill the food gap for children and teens during summer vacation throughout Knox County. Following an open application process, FFTH is excited to award a total of $14,500 in grant funds to these local organizations:
Central Christian Food Pantry—$2,000
Central Christian Food Pantry provides food to families in Knox County, serving around 160 families a month and 1,000 individuals a month.
CHOMP—$500
CHOMP is a community-wide produce market and is a produce market in Knox County that serves families in need.
Church on the Rise—$2,000
Church on the Rise serves anywhere from 175–225 families a month within the county on a regular distribution date and is also available upon emergency needs. Church on the Rise is also listed on the local 211 number to call for emergency needs.
Fredericktown United Methodist Church—$2,000
Fredericktown United Methodist Church provides a weekly community hot meal and is currently serving curbside with a volunteer delivering meal(s) to vehicles. All meals are cooked, packaged, and served by volunteers. FUMC is currently serving over 380 meals each Wednesday (49 weeks a year).
Freedom Center—$2,000
The Freedom Center is a non-profit behavioral health agency providing substance use and mental health treatment services, medication assistance treatment, psychiatric services, prevention education and family support, and education for families impacted by someone’s substance use. The Freedom Center participates in collaborative and support services to a variety of coalitions in the community.
First Congregational United Church of Christ Hot Meals
FCUC provides a Tuesday evening meal each week involving shared cooperation with St. Vincent in the Hot Meals program. FCUC also shares the extra or leftover food with the Main Place and has also shared food treats with Dan Emmett Elementary School.
Say A Prayer Ministries—$2,000
Say A Prayer Ministries is a church that has a food pantry called InJoy Food Pantry located in Martinsburg. Say A Prayer Ministries is also in partnership with MidOhio Food Bank and feeds anywhere from 150 to 300 people a month. Say A Prayer Ministries can also help families with emergency needs between outreach days.
TouchPointe Marriage & Family Resources—
TouchPointe gives people in recovery a safe place to go and learn about Jesus and healthy relationships. TouchPointe also provides snacks, meals, etc. to “neighbors” who are in the process of recovery.
“We are extremely fortunate to have the funds to continue to offer summer grants to provide assistance to families while their children are home for the summer,” said FFTH President Samantha Scoles. “I’ve learned about several innovative approaches food pantries are taking to make sure the right foods are available for just this purpose.”
Due to the love and generosity of this community, Food For The Hungry is able to meet needs that are not normally met on a regular basis. The support given to FFTH annually has both overwhelmed and humbled not only the Board of Directors, but those who are experiencing the direct impact on their ministry, organization, and families.
