Don’t Volcano Mulch Your Trees

We wanted to share this post from the Ohio Division of Forestry. Posted @withregram • @odnrforestry Don’t volcano mulch your trees! Your trees will decline and die.
Volcano mulching gets its name from mounding up a mountain of mulch around the trunk. As one of the most common crimes against Ohio landscape trees, it is costing tree lives by strangling and burning trunks, limiting water availability to your tree, and shortening their lives.
Mulch is good, just not too much. Only use 3-4” deep as wide as you can get away with – leaving a hand’s width mulch-free around the trunk. It will dress up your yard, reduce your mowing, and make your tree happier.
