Mount Vernon City Schools Transitioning to Green Learning Model

Mount Vernon City Schools would like to thank all of those individuals who participated in our recent ‘Thought Exchange’ and in the multiple surveys over the past couple of weeks.  The ‘Thought Exchange’ shared 704 thoughts by 621 participants.  We were also incredibly pleased with the survey participation.

  • Parent survey – 1,713 participants
  • Student survey – 877 participants
  • Staff survey – 323 participants

The district administration spent considerable time this week with Knox Public Health and several prominent local physicians to evaluate current research, current state, and local data, as well as trends relative to the health and safety of students and staff. We greatly appreciate their valuable insights and support.

After reviewing all of the information gathered from Knox County COVID data, Thought Exchange, multiple surveys, and discussions with local health professionals and various school groups, a change in learning models will take place.  Beginning Monday, October 19th, Mount Vernon City Schools will transition to the Traditional (Green) learning model where students will attend in-person learning, five days a week. The district will continue to offer a ‘Digital Academy’ option to students in grades K-12.

The transition from the Hybrid learning model to the Traditional learning model will require some substantial coordination and planning.  It is important that we have an accurate accounting of students who will be participating in the Mount Vernon Digital Academy (MVDA).

  • If you are a current MVDA student and you wish to return to your school building and participate in the traditional learning model, please fill out the appropriate intent form at the bottom of this page. (If a form is not received, the assumption will be that the student wishes to remain in the MVDA program.)
  • If you are currently a Hybrid student and you wish to enroll in the MVDA, please fill out the appropriate intent form at the bottom of this page.
  • If you are currently a Hybrid student and you wish to remain in school and participate in the traditional learning model (in-person, five days a week) you do not need to complete an intent form.

We have set a deadline for families to declare their intent, which will be Wednesday, October 7th at 9:00 pm.  This will allow us to begin the planning process for the second nine weeks of school.  Your intent is a commitment to remain in the selected learning model through the first semester (January 19, 2021).

While we are excited to bring our students back to school five days each week, we do so with cautious optimism, remaining committed to the safety protocols we have been practicing during the first nine weeks.  We also recognize that we must remain nimble and flexible with the ability to adapt to changing conditions, should they arise.

Respectfully yours,

William Seder Jr.
