K9 Officer May Assists in Poaching Bust

Along with her handler, Huron County Wildlife Officer Nathan Kaufmann, and State Wildlife Investigators Kelsey Brockman and Kevin Good, both assigned to the Lake Erie Unit, K9 May was recently conducting waterfowl hunting enforcement along the shores of Lake Erie. A group of hunters was observed shooting and hitting a wood duck and two mallards, all out of season.

Officers contacted the hunters and K9 May was able to locate the ducks, which were hidden in the brush. The hunters were issued the appropriate summons for taking waterfowl during a closed season. K9 officers are trained in wildlife detection, including locating fish, deer, turkey, waterfowl, and more. They are also trained in detecting ginseng and gun powder.
