Free Screening of “Gold Diggers of 1935” at the Silver Screeners Classic Movie Matinee

Time to sing and dance along with the Academy Award-winning ”Gold Diggers of 1935”  at the free Silver Screeners Classic Movie Matinee on Sunday, February 23, 1:30 p.m. at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street.

In this entry into the Gold Diggers musical series, the beautiful Busby Berkeley babes are back at work, seeking financial backing for a Broadway show. Salvation comes from a meek hypochondriac who’d rather the girls get his insurance money than his murderous business partners.

Dick Powell is the affable hotel clerk (no longer a songwriter) who falls for the stingy millionairess’ daughter (Gloria Stuart). Frank McHugh, the scapegrace son, who’s checked off three chorus-girl wives at the rate of $100,000 settlement to each, is the vis-a-vis of Dorothy Dare. Adolphe Menjou is the irascible, chiseling entrepreneur, with Joe Cawthorn as comedy foil. Alice Brady is equally legit and effective in her skinflint assignment. The film features the Al Dubin-Harry Warren songs, the waltz themed “The Words Are in My Heart”  and the final musical elaboration “Lullaby of Broadway.” (Variety)

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information call the main library at 740-392-BOOK (2665), visit www.knox.net or email communityrelations@knox.net.
