Brown Announces $250,000 for Campus Improvements at Ohio University

Funds will Renovate Ohio University Innovation Center, Create New Biotechnology Laboratory

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $250,000 to Ohio University for renovations to the Ohio University Innovation Center (IC). The funds will be used to convert former office space into a biotechnology laboratory, and add a new heating system and virtual conferencing technology to the building. This project will support 20 area businesses employing over 300 people and is expected to help create 10 new businesses and 100 jobs within 3 years.

“These funds will help ensure Ohio University has the tools and resources to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to advance their careers,” said Brown. “This investment will not only support faculty and students, but will also lead to more jobs and economic growth in Athens and the surrounding area.”

ARC supports Ohio and twelve other states across Appalachia to stimulate local economies, provide job training, expand broadband access in rural areas, and support local infrastructure needs. In 2017, after President Trump’s budget proposed eliminating the ARC program entirely, Brown has successfully advocated for continued funding of the program.  Brown has spoken out about the importance of ARC and against any cuts to the program.
