Congratulations to MVHS juniors Ethan Teet, Alex Yost, and Jacey Hartman for winning 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place in the Knox County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. high school essay contest. The theme this year was “Where Do We Go From Here, Chaos or Community?” after one of King’s books. They were recognized at the 17th annual MLK celebration breakfast held at Ariel Arena at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Monday, January 20th. Each received $50, $75, or $100 cash, as well as a certificate and many logo gifts from MVNU and Kenyon College. Included in Jacey Hartman’s essay were Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s prophetic words from his final speech, “We’ve got some difficult days ahead.” Indeed there have been many difficult days since that speech in Memphis in 1968. There still exist difficulties for people of color in securing quality housing, employment, education, and healthcare. However, unlike in Dr. King’s era, there is more public awareness through social media that can potentially spread hatred to the masses through cyber racism. This same medium also has the power to send more accurate and hopeful messages that can give a voice to underrepresented groups as well.” All three King essay contest winners are from Mr. Fetters’ 9th period American Government and Economics class.
