Wildlife Survival in Winter: Eating, Collecting, Storing Food

When the weather turns cold and food becomes scarce, what do wildlife do to survive? Many animals, like the black bear, will begin to eat more in the months leading up to winter to increase their fat reserves which can be used if food is unavailable for a short time. Others, like squirrels and beavers, store nuts, acorns, and twigs away in a food cache to be eaten throughout the cold weather season. Then there are some animals that, while food may be harder to come by, continue to go about business as usual. Foxes and owls are good examples of animals that continue to hunt for food throughout Ohio’s winter.
