Wildlife Survival in Winter: Physical Adaptations

Winter’s cold weather can be tough on Ohio’s wildlife. While some animals migrate to warmer weather, many stay and must find ways to withstand the cold. Those hearty animals that stick around have a variety of important adaptations that help them survive the frigid months. Most mammals that are active during the winter will grow a thicker fur coat as the weather turns cold. Some animals, like the snowshoe hare and ermine (similar to a weasel), not only grow a warmer coat but change from brown to white for camouflage in the snow. Many birds also stay in Ohio for the winter. To stay warm, birds will puff up their feathers to keep an extra layer of air around their bodies. They will also huddle together and roost in tree cavities or other protected area to keep out of the harsh elements.
