Where Do They Go in Winter: Backyard Wildlife

As winter weather rolls in, most of us spend more time indoors trying to keep warm. But what do your backyard wildlife do in the dropping temperatures? Some migrate, some hibernate, and others stay put, growing thick coats and consuming extra food to keep them warm.

Some animals, like the groundhog, are true hibernators and will hibernate the entire winter, only reemerging when some signs of spring begin to show in February. Others like skunks, raccoons, chipmunks, and opossums are known to go into temporary hibernation when temperatures drop dangerously low. During this time, they seek shelter in trees, logs, beneath rocks or underground.

Still others, like many birds, migrate to warmer climates for the winter months where food and warmth are readily available.
