Fredericktown Local Schools Receives Violent Intruder Preparedness Certification

The Fredericktown Local Schools has attained status as an ALICE Certified Organization. ALICE (Alert, Lock-down, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) is an acronym for the training program that prepares school students and staff to prevent, mitigate, respond to and recover from a violent critical incident.

Since her arrival to the district, School Superintendent Dr. Susan Hayward has made the safety of the students and staff at FLS one of her top priorities. She has proven this commitment by partnering with the Fredericktown Police Department and School Resource Officer (SRO) Ronny Flynn to ensure that the school district has the necessary training and skills to not only receive this
certification but to also be prepared to respond to a violent intruder incident.

In an initiative led by SRO Flynn, the staff and students at Fredericktown Local Schools have successfully demonstrated their commitment to school safety by completing what the ALICE Training Institute calls “blended learning”. SRO Flynn commented that “Blended learning is a perfect combination of online e-Learning content and in-person skills sessions.” As a certified ALICE instructor, SRO Flynn is able to guide students on these vital lifesaving skills not only in the classroom but also through hands-on scenarios and drills.

The Ohio Attorney General’s office in connection with the Ohio School Safety Task Force recommends that schools follow all of the training protocols found in the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) training program. ALICE is already endorsed by law enforcement across the country and is in line with recommendations from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

SRO Flynn stated that “I am excited about Fredericktown Local Schools receiving this certification and the ongoing relationship that the Fredericktown Police Department has with the school district. This certification is a reflection of that relationship and the commitment that we share to ensure a safe learning environment.”
