The Lonesome Gamer – Part #2

In my last blog, I briefly talked about different ways of playing games: Solo, Cooperative and Competitive. So it’s time to put my money where my mouth is and tell you about some of these games. These are games I own and have played and enjoyed at some point.

Single Player Only – ‘Friday’
In Friday you play as “Friday” and must help Robinson Crusoe survive the island and prepare him to defeat the pirates. It’s a small deck-building game that revolves around two decks of cards. One represents the hazards on the island that need to be overcome, whilst the other represents Robinson Crusoe’s skills in overcoming the hazards. Every turn you draw two Hazard cards and choose which one you want Robinson Crusoe to deal with. The white number on the left indicates how many skill cards Robinson Crusoe can draw and use whilst the coloured number will show you what number you have to beat for that turn. If you manage to beat the number you spin the Hazard card 180 degrees and place it in the Robinson Crusoe skill discard pile, ready to use it again as a skill.

Cooperative – ‘Wrath of Ashardalon’
Wrath of Ashardalon is a tile-laying dungeon crawler and one of my favourite games. You and up to four others must work your way through a maze of tunnels and chambers (which changes every game). You can choose to be either a warrior, a wizard, a thief, a rogue or a cleric and will have to complete a task set to you by the adventure book that comes with the game. There are monsters aplenty that hunt you down, traps to overcome and you can gain experience and ‘level up’ characters to become more powerful.

Competitive – ‘Memoir 44’
Remember the little green and grey plastic soldiers you used to play with as a kid? Well, now you can play with them when you’re grown-up! Memoir ’44 is a two-player historical board game where players face-off in stylized battles of some of the most famous historic battles of World War II on either a beach or countryside setting. Use a simple card-based system to move your miniature troops, tanks and infantry through towns, forests, defences and over bridges to take out your opponent and gain victory!

So as you can see, there’s more to board games than the usual ones you find in the charity/thrift stores!

“But wait!..” I hear you cry… “I want to know more about what games are available! I want to see what kind of games me and my family would like! Where would I get this information?”

Well… I’m glad you asked…..
