Weekend Activity: Make your own suet and suet feeder!

Fats may have a bad reputation when included in the human diet but this high-calorie item attracts many species of birds, especially those which feed extensively on insects. Suet feeders are a great resource for wintering birds who rely on high-fat content to survive the colder months. Downy and hairy woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, and blue jays are common visitors at a suet feeder.

First, you’ll want to make a suet feeder. You can find plans for a suet box on our website here: http://ow.ly/83vl30eZ1Gu
Or, if you like the rustic look, you can create a suet log.

Peanut butter or suet filled log:

Cut a 15-18” length of a 3-4” diameter branch. Drill holes partway into the log and spread peanut butter or softened suet into the holes.

There are numerous ways to make suet, so the recipe is up to you and what you want to serve neighborhood feathered friends. You can always search the internet for different recipes, but here is one to get you started: http://ow.ly/izhE30eZ1zw
