2019 A Universe of Stories Children & Teen Summer Reading Programs Schedule

The 2019 “A Universe of Stories” Youth and Teen Summer Reading Programs are ready for liftoff at all four library locations of the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.

At the Mount Vernon main library, elementary school age children can register at the youth services circulation desk or call 740-392-2665 ext. 248.

Storytime for Preschool & Kindergartners will be held on Tuesdays, June 4 thru July 9, at 10:00 a.m. in the lower level multimedia room. Baby Storytime (through age 2) will be held on Wednesdays, June 5 – July 10, 10:00 a.m. in the Children’s Storytime Room.

Registration is required for three new youth services summer reading program clubs.

The Astro Art Club will meet at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 3, to make space headbands, constellations, a starry night painting and a constellation. Then, on Monday, June 10, the group will make Father’s Day crafts such as duct tape wallets, DIY kites and pool noodle light sabers.

The Galaxy Gamers Club on Monday, June 17, 4:30 p.m. for a sorting space game, Protect the Planet, and Floating in Space. Then, on Monday, June 24, the group will play Giant Space Invaders. Finally on July 8, members will create space coloring bingo and space mad libs.

Space “S-team” Club will begin on Tuesday, June 4, 4:30 p.m., with Mini-Figure Rescue, on June 11, Circuited Bands of Power, on June 18, Stop Motion Video, on June 25, Daytime Star Shine and finally on July 9, Build a Robotic Arm.

Two SRP programs will be held at the Y-Sports Center, 200 W. Chestnut Street, at 10:00 a.m. with a visit from the Columbus Zoo Animal Ambassadors on June 13 and SPI SPOT on June 20.

All four library locations are invited to enjoy a free feature film at “Library Day at the Movies” on Thursday, June 27, 10:00 a.m., at the Mount Vernon Premier/UEC Theater, 11535 Upper Gilchrist Road.

Mount Vernon main library will have its children’s SRP closing party on Thursday, July 11, 10:00 a.m. at “Party in the Parking Lot.” Children who have completed their reading goals will receive a free book.  Then everyone is invited to enjoy carnival games, temporary tattoos, an “Out of this World” photo booth, Rex Naylor balloon animal creations, color your own space fuzzy magnets and Hawaiian Sno-2-Go.

The Fredericktown Community Library SRP will begin with Storytime on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. from June 4 – June 25. Storytime will include activities on aliens, spaces and solar system crafts,

“Moonlight Bowling” for elementary school age children will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Trio Lanes of Fredericktown. The first game is free courtesy of Fredericktown Chevrolet and the Fredericktown Community Foundation.

Two special programs will be held at the old Fredericktown High School gym, 117 Columbus Road. On Wednesday, June 12, 1:00 p.m. the Columbus Zoo Animal Ambassadors will visit with an array of interesting ‘guests’ and on June 19 SPI SPOT will make science fun. On Thursday, June 20, 6:00 p.m. children can make a special “Cosmic Slime” in “Make it and Go” back at the Fredericktown Community Library. Registration is required. From July 1-6 the public can stop in during business hours and “Decorate a Moon Rock.”

The Danville Public Library elementary school age children SRP programs will be on Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke Community Center. The Columbus Zoo Animal Ambassadors will visit on June 13 and SPI SPOT will be there on June 20. The Danville SRP closing party will be at the Danville Memorial Park Pavilion. Children who have reached their reading goals will be eligible to receive a free book courtesy of the Friends of the Library.

The Gambier Community Library will have two special summer reading programs beginning with the Columbus Zoo Animal Ambassadors on Wednesday, June 12, 10:00 a.m. at the Gambier Community Center gym, and then with SPI SPOT on June 19.

Children who reach their reading goals may bring in their reading records to the library on July 10 to receive a free book courtesy of the Friends of the Library. A closing party will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Gambier Community Center park shelter.

Teens can also join in the SRP fun at the main library in Mount Vernon. Students in grades 6-12 can pick up a registration pamphlet in the Teen Makerspace for chances to win prizes and a list of scheduled programs.  Projects and dates include Mondays and Tuesdays, 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. On  June 3-4, participants will make Galaxy Slime, on June 10-11, a Light Up Constellation Art, on June 17-18 a DIY Galaxy T-shirt (bring your own shirt and learn how to transform it into wearable art), June 24, Video Game Night in the lower level multimedia room, June 25, DIY Galaxy Soap, July 1-2 Rocket Building, and on July 8, Launching a Rocket outside during the end of Teen SRP prize giveaway.
